With all due respect to the other anons, please disregard the "Stonehenge is for tourists" nonsense. If you avoid everything in England that's popular with tourists, you'll miss out big time. A few things to keep in mind:

1) Yes, Stonehenge is a very popular tourism site.
2) Yes, you're not allowed to walk between the stones and have to keep your distance and the stones are smaller than you think they are.
3) But as far as tourist sites go, it's nowhere near as obnoxious as even a small theme park in the U.S.
4) And it is still cool.

Avebury will let you walk among the stones and it's also a great place to visit. Hit both if you can. :)

Stonehenge, as a neolithic site, is as authentic as a Victorian folly is for a classical Roman site. Mainly because Stonehenge is a Victorian folly now, it has been tinkered about too much with and the stones are set and fixed with modern cement. The wider landscape around it has some interesting neolithic features, which you'll need to be on a verified academic dig to visit, but the stones themselves are as inauthentic as you can get.
