Not relevant but I personally feel a lot of my problems could be resolved after swimming in a pool of hunks... is that really what happens in the show?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. Sadly, my city is sorely lacking in a Municipal Hunk Pool.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Not really, sadly. What really happened was that Haru figured out that he likes submerging his body in foreign pools more than the usual boring Japanese pools. So now he's going to become a professional swimmer so he can plunge into pools in lots of different countries.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
The context is Haru is scared about his future. He swims because he loves it not because he cares about breaking records or times. Though he has the talent he doesn't want to go pro because of the pressure. Everyone is kinda pushing him to get a move on with his life and he snaps from all the pressure.

Rin takes him to Australia and he sees their pool and then he turns into a bird and flies over the pool and then he wants to go pro. Not even kidding. That is what happened.

Is it made of poop?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-05 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, S2 definitely wasn't as good as the first season. But I still enjoyed it.

I just don't get the love for Sousuke, but then again, I didn't get the love for Rin until he stopped being emo and shit and now he's one of my favorite characters.

There's not enough love for Rei and I never saw Mako ever making a career out of being a swimmer anyway, and didn't he say he wanted to be a swim teacher?

I didn't care for Sousuke either and Rin has always been one of my least favorite characters. I don't hate him but I wouldn't say I liked him either, at least in S1.

He did grow on me in S2 but I'll probably never share the fandoms love for him.

(That said, I'm a casual Free! fan so I'm not sure how much my opinion matters.)

♥ Rei though. (I don't remember if Mako said he wanted to be a swim teacher... I think he did? He should be! He would be excellent at it.)

Rin went from being too unlikable in S1 for my tastes to being too perfect in S2. He made my Gary Stu radar ping in a very annoying way.

I really started liking Sousuke on my second watching, though.

And yes, Makoto goes to Tokyo to become a swim teacher in the end.

I loved S2 but you are allowed to dislike things.

S2 felt like an entirely different show at times because of how serious it was. I don't blame people who came for the fluff, pretty boys and nice animation getting upset at the sudden turn. Honestly, I was there for the fan-service too so when S2 happened I was in total shock. Like, "Wow, this is a bit too real. What happened?"

Like I said, I ended up loving it but the second season was a vastly different show.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I agree; I definitely liked S1 more.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I liked S1 more too, but anyone who still doesn't get why Haru found his dream in Australia after having the actors explain it, the director explain it, the series designer explain it...well at that point, you have to be willfully ignorant.

This isn't a show that requires critical thinking. It's been made abundantly clear.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not everybody follows what the behind-the-scenes people say? I have no idea what any of those people have said about the series, I just watched the thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, yeah. I heard all that shit but it still seems like a cop out.

The thing is a lot of people related to Haru not knowing what to do with his life. He was even dragging his feet the entire time he was in Australia until he turned into a bird before diving into the water. So that left the people who sympathized with him scratching their head because it's not that easy.

Saying that the show is not complex doesn't even excuse it since they set it up to be complex with episode 9's nervous breakdown.

S2 was cute, and I enjoyed it, but it definitely wasn't as good as S1. That being said, I really did like Haru's story. I found the anxiety of not knowing what to do after high school (or college) to be something I really related to. I felt that was the season's strongest story.

Sousuke (Rin's friend?) was bland though. He could've been cut completely.

Where can I find the full image of OP's secret?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-06 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I liked S1 better as well. But I did love Makoto's ending. He's going to be an awesome swim teacher. I never expected him to go pro in the first place. He doesn't seem like the kind of person who would enjoy that life.

I feel like s2 could have explored its themes better if it had been double the length. I remember looking at K-ON and thinking how the second series worked so much better than the first because it had so much more room to breathe (s1 shoved two school years into 12 episodes, s2 was one school year in 26 episodes), even if it did mean the occasional episode all about Yui doing her hair or whatever.

As it was, to me, Eternal Summer felt like they tried to cram too much into it. The series barely had time to fit all its existing characters (like you say, with Rei and Nagisa), and then we have all these new characters showing up? I still don't understand what the point of Momotaro even was, except for to annoy the shit out of me.

I never warmed to Sousuke either - he felt like he was there specifically for the Cliche Sports Injury Storyline that they didn't feel like giving any of the mains, and then in the end his storyline just sort of... petered out, because it wasn't about Rin or Haru. I did think that Haru's anxieties were presented well, but I wish all my problems could be solved by my BFF taking me to Australia all of a sudden. Did Rin's host parents send him two tickets? Is Rin secretly rich? Those things aren't cheap.

It felt to me like even in the character-specific episodes it was becoming Samezuka: The Series, and if there had been more episodes then that wouldn't have been so much of a problem, but as it was, I was just sat there thinking that I don't really care about anybody on Samezuka who isn't Rin (shoujo princess Rin is the best part of s2) and why did Iwatobi characters become bit-parts in their own story and egh.

Although it did have animated Kisumi, which I'm fine with. Kisumi was great.

Yep, all that and also a special congrats to someone in charge for making me annoyed when Haru decided to go pro.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I always assumed he would go pro, I just hate how they made him have a nervous breakdown like it was seriously bothering him only to resolve it fairly easily.
