Indeed, it's quite eerie sometimes how similar the Bible and the Constitution are in terms of how they're interpreted/misinterpreted. It often seems people who take the word of the Bible very seriously and literally also tend to be the same way with our Constitution. Because who cares that times change, right? What people centuries ago said stays regardless!

Oh, and FYI, fox news, we still have guns. If you are interested in competitive shooting, you can even have your own.

*Waves hands* Shhhh! They can't let your pesky facts get in the way of their narrative!

GUNS! WE HAVE GUNS! DO YOU HEAR ME, FOX NEWS?

America and Australia both have dodgy, shameful, violent pasts.

I think I prefer our current way of doing things. It's a little more reasonable. If we had an intelligent discussion about what our needs are concerning firearms today, I think most people would agree that things are different now.

Who wants to be sensible though, really?

That's the funny part-wasn't Australia essentially founded by criminals, shipped there from other parts of the world? If a country with those sorts of iffy beginnings can sort themselves out on this issue, surely we can, too.

And regarding the current/past discussion, that's another thing-it'd be a tough haul for any pro-gun people battling the government today if it came to that. In the 1700s, the government and the citizens were at least a little more closely matched in terms of weaponry. Nowadays our government can let loose a nuke with one push of the button, and they have drones as well. Do the "FREEDOM! SECOND AMENDMENT!" people seriously think they'll be able to put up a good fight against that?

I guess the "guns to fend off the government" thing also confuses me because, yes, our federal government is fucked up and corrupt most, if not all, of the time. Yes, there are some scary people who have worked, and are working, in it. I'm certainly not going to disagree with that.

But I still don't feel a need to arm myself against them. I don't really buy into paranoia and conspiracy theories to begin with, and the corruption that does exist, I don't see it as extreme enough to where I'd need to arm up for battle. I don't think we're on the verge of tyranny by any stretch. Frankly, I think a lot of our government officials just aren't that bright enough to where they could create that kind of government even if they wanted to :p (the fact that they often seem very confused about the difference between socialism, communism, and tyranny is proof of that).

And if we did get to a tyrannical state someday, certainly I'd do my part to try and combat it where possible, but I still don't see myself grabbing a gun to do so. There's all sorts of ways to rebel out there.

Yes and no, criminals and opportunists. It was a penal colony (lololol penal), but when news reached England, and subsequently other countries that we had a fuckload of natural resources (coal, timber) and an unknown amount of gold that nobody was claiming for themselves, people started coming here in big numbers to get rich quick.

Some of my family came here to grow fruit originally, because they heard the soil was good. My other great-grandfather was a con artist though. He supposedly left England because the cops were after him for something. So yes. We were all criminals.

The weird militant survivalists probably do think they could go up against the army. It's like the sad middle-aged version of Home Alone.

You mean you're not paranoid? You aren't preoccupied with conspiracy theories? D:
Do you... are you talking about... peaceful protest and petitions? Surely not!
