Yeah, haha, the word "freedom" has pretty much lost its meaning in these debates. Ignores the distinction between "freedom to" and "freedom from" (rights and responsibilities) as part of a democratic society with mutual obligations, but that's libertarians for you.

I haven't seen many gun lobby types in Australia recently though I'm sure they're out there. I would have assumed they would be in the Top End where I used to live, but no. So many people hunted, they had the guns they wanted anyway, I guess. Still not a gun-crazy environment.

I do think social cohesion, a sense of collective responsibility, a well-functioning democracy, affluence, welfare, belonging, all that, goes a LONG way towards making a society safer. I feel like gun deaths are as much of a symptom as a cause of a lot of problems in the US.

I'll definitely agree with this. The fact that some people get to a point in their lives where they feel the need to solve their problems with others with guns in the first place is a massive sign something isn't right somewhere.

In NSW we have the Shooters and Fishers Party.

I think they're in a few other states as well.

Let's not forget Katter, too!

Hell, violent deaths are a symptom of problems here, too. I would like more information about where Turnbull's domestic violence money is going. From what I understand, not enough is going to crisis centres and community programs. It's going to the police.

Oh yeah THEM. I'd always have fun debating where to put them on the Senate preferences - at the bottom, or should that be the Citizen's Electoral Council, or just the Liberals? They lobbied successfully for hunting in NSW national parks, right?

I haven't kept up with the news about Turnbull's turnaround on funding. Right. Huh. I know that intervention orders are really not that effective in practice, and the police often arrive too late if not at all. I know that shelter funding was gutted by Abbott, so I really hope that some of that is going to be reinstated, but yeah, is it two women a week killed by their male partner/ex here? Something like that.

Ughhhh. Those people. Yes they want amateurs to be allowed to shoot unsupervised in national parks. They got support from Barry O'Farrell because he wanted them in on the power privatisation thing.

I think it is two a week. :(
