Inadvertently illegal

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm renting at the moment, and a bunch of vegetables have self-seeded in the garden, as well as weeds. Well, this blueish thistly ugly thing, three of them, punched their way out of the earth and grew up to my hip in a very short space of time. Didn't know what they were, thought they were thistles or artichokes maybe. Anyway, today one of them unfolds a beautiful pink flower...

%#@%$!! I've got opium poppies in my garden. Which are... not legal. I guess the pensioner who used to live here had a good time.

I should uproot them and chuck em out immediately, but on the other hand no one can see them from the street, and they're going to be pretty once all the flowers are out... and I'm just a bit curious about maybe putting some in my tea... and um... yeah...

opiates can be pretty darn addictive so be careful about dosage and frequency if you try them

Keep, em. They're super pretty. I would keep them just for that.

My general advice for growing and then taking drugs is that you need to be an expert on whatever the shit that is. Mostly because if you're not lots of bad shit happens. You know, like death. (Which reminds me of a funny/sad story of a few kids at my former high school.)

But, uh, opiates in general are very addictive. Just fyi.

I would never know the difference between an opium poppy and one of the non-opiate varieties people keep in gardens. The pictures I'm finding online all look the same. How do you know they are opium poppies?

ayrt I've had some botanical training/experience, so once I started looking at the Papaver genus, it seems pretty clear it's P. somniferum. Not sure what subspecies yet - probably not the most potent one. I just can't bring myself to destroy it (yet)! I went out on the street before and a tall person could look over the fence and see it, if they knew what they were looking at from a distance, so idk, it's a quiet area. There's so many weeds in this garden it's really nice having some flowers, things flourishing, I just don't want to get into trouble. But there could be enough there for an experimental opiate dose, I really do not know anyone who could sell me any more, and I'm not an addictive personality, but I have an attitude of trying everything once. Hmm. It's like I can't just ignore it now I know what it is, I have to make a decision.

Probably your neighbors are like me and wouldn't know what they were looking at.

huh. I did not know people grew poppies especially for opium. I thought all poppies had it in their seeds. Maybe some have been bread to have bigger/more concentrated seeds?

anyway, yeah, please do not put it in your tea. you do NOT want to go there. :(

I wouldn't blame you for keeping them because they look pretty, but if it were me I would not risk it, either. Of course maybe if they grow so well, you could replace them easily with ordinary poppies, which are, as you said, quite nice.

Keep em but don't drink em.

Er, are you in the US? I ask because my mom grows them pretty much every year; not only are they pretty, the seeds are the ones you can eat, and so far as I know, it's not illegal to grow them here, only to process them into opium. We had to stop growing them in our front yard, though, because people would come by and slash the seed capsules with a razor. It's not like we grew enough poppies to make a useable amount.

ayrt Not in the US. I've just learned on further browsing that the seeds are legal, as they're the type you use in baking, and the imported ones are sometimes viable. So they're not hard to get. Some dude here got jailed after filling his garden with them; he was an addict of course.
