Advice?

Post here if you need random advice! Mine is below.

Job awkardness

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I have a job interview tomorrow morning, but I'm also scheduled to work at my current job tomorrow. The awkwardness comes in because there's a 'mandatory staff meeting' tomorrow after work that I totally forgot about when scheduling this interview. It was a very sudden and unexpected interview. I mean really I'd have no problem with going to my interview and then going to work, but what can I call out with that would only be half a day?

Any advice on excuses to give? Should I just say screw it to the staff meeting? I mean ideally this interview goes awesome and I give my notice on Monday, but still.

Doctor's appointment?

They are very adamant about getting doctor's notes. So any doctor or real illness is out.

Car trouble is a classic.

I was thinking of that, but I am a horrible liar and am worried about what I'd say when I get there and my coworkers inevitably ask what was wrong and/or where I took the car or how I got it fixed etc. Am I just overthinking this? (Yes, yes I am.)

If you're not a car person, "I dunno, wouldn't start and made a 'wwrrrrrrr' noise. Had to get my neighbor to take a look at it" is a perfectly valid explanation.

Dead battery because you left your console light on, had to find some one to jump it, took a while, but now all is well.

Oh, that could work. Add in some of above anon's non-car talk talk. I think car trouble is the way to go. Thank you!

"Personal reasons." Deflect any demand for more information.

Personal reasons, personal family reasons, small family emergency then end it with a "it's private I don't want to talk about it".

Unspecified family emergency. If they press you, say that you're very upset and don't want to talk about it. Tell them you'll take whatever 'hit' they might impose for not showing up a half day (if any), but that you simply don't want to talk about it.
