They probably have seen the show, but there are a lot of people who join fandoms with no knowledge of the canon other than fanfic. (Which, honestly, is v. depressing. I'm all about the squee and it's hard to squee with people who are all "lol I've only seen one ep I just like fic." Sigh.)

... I know that wasn't the point.

People do that? Seriously how can they write fic if they have no knowledge of the characters? (that sounds like I'm outraged - I'm not lol I'm genuinely curious how people are able to pull that off)

Yep. I remember the moment I realized this and how genuinely I felt hurt and betrayed. Ah, to be young and innocent once more.

They just write the characterization they've seen in fic. I've heard that was a big problem in Ranma 1/2 fandom--folks who saw the show wrote darkfic, and then folks who'd never seen the show loved the darkfic and wrote darkfic of that, and it turned into a spiral of darkness with each character boiled down to their most popular (or most bashed) fanon traits.
