I wouldn't rate it one star because of it, but it could be argued that the chances of every single person in a squad being a woman impersonating a man is less likely than vampires and trolls which are common in Discworld canon

Every person being a woman is not noteworthy, but the fact that they were all women pretending to be men who all joined individually raises the chances much higher than 'being women'

that being said I enjoyed the book

* all women pretending to be men who all joined individually without knowing all the others were women pretending to be men

It's as if every other person in Mulan had turned out to secretly be women too. Or if every other woman in Some Like It Hot had turned out to be men. I'd be able to suspend my disbelief but I wouldn't blame others for not buying it

SA

That being said if they were saying it's unbelievable that a functioning squad is feasible because lol wimmin!! then that's super sexist and the people are stupid

I'm only talking about the disbelief regarding the chances that every single woman is in the exact same circumstances individually without knowing

it is exactly the kind of unfeasible contrivance that light comedy is littered with, though

AYRT

People have different limits even with comedy what they'll believe. Sometimes it gets too farfetched for people, especially people who aren't generally fans of Discworld

It differs by genre too. If everyone in Sixth Sense had been dead instead of just Bruce Willis, I'd have rolled my eyes instead of thinking it clever

I don't know, there were so few men around in their country towards to end stages of the war that the odds of a whole batch of new recruits being women is much more likely.

And that is the reason why I personally think it works - any idea, no matter how ridiculous, can be made to work by a good writer, and Sir Pterry was a damn good writer.
