Assumptions you make about people in certain fandoms

As a general sort of thing.

Feel free to mention ones you're in too.

Bronies are very very bad.

Weebs are either pretty cool or terribly embarrassing. There is no in between.

That's... pretty much true in my experience.

Whovians are insane and act like idiots when you play the tardis noise.

Re: Assumptions you make about people in certain fandoms

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, that's proven.

Re: Assumptions you make about people in certain fandoms

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's legitimately true. All Whovians are basically insane. Not all in the same way, but if you like Doctor Who, there's going to be something you're completely insane about.

Anime fans have a lot of free time. Same with video game fans.

Re: Assumptions you make about people in certain fandoms

I assume a good chunk of regular anime watchers are unemployed/underemployed or fairly young, but as a hobby it's not time intensive at all. Most shows are like 12 or 24 half an hour episodes.

Re: Assumptions you make about people in certain fandoms

(Anonymous) 2015-10-09 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
And most episodes are 24 minutes long, including the op and ending so if you skip them each ep. is around 20 minutes long.

But anime episodes are so much shorter than regular TV show episodes. It' s not nearly as time consuming as being a TV show fan.

I think if they watch every new anime that comes out or play every new video game that's true, but I consider myself a fan of both those things and I go months without watching anime because I like to have the time to sit down with it.

Video games are easy to pick up when you do mobile or things like 3DS a lot. That's why I don't have a lot of console games.

Really they are like any hobby, some people indulge a lot and some people only do it when they have the time.

I wish! These days I gotta make time to sit down and watch anime, let alone read manga.

it's probably the opposite, they (we) had great childhoods and not-so-great adulthoods that are causing us to regress to when things were better?

(Fandoms I am in or have been in are the bolded ones.)

Mass Effect, Portal, and most other popular sci-fi video game fandoms: Hardcore gamers who think they're superior to other geeks.

Final Fantasy: Stereotypical nerds and weeaboos.

Lord of the Rings, Star Trek TOS, and Star Trek TNG: Old farts who want everyone else to get off their lawn and young'uns who either A) had the fandom passed down to them from their parents/grandparents, or B) got into Trek/LotR through the reboot/movies.

Star Trek DS9 and Voyager: The same as TOS & TNG, but with more hispters.

Star Trek Enterprise: People who don't like the other Star Trek shows.

Star Trek Reboot: The same as Enterprise, but with more Migratory Slash Fandom types who jumped on the bandwagon after losing interest in SPN/Teen Wolf/Merlin/etc.

X-Men (comics): Self-proclaimed 90s kids.

X-Men (movies): People who find the franchise's concept and characters interesting, but hate comic books.

MCU and Arrow: Same as the X-Men movies.

Smallville: People who either A) have never read a Superman comic, or B) read a few Superman comics and decided they found Superman boring.

The Walking Dead: People who either A) don't like the survival horror genre in general but make an exception for this show, or B) really really really REALLY like the genre to the point where you wonder if they're stockpiling guns in their basement in the event of an actual zombie apocalypse.

Sherlock Holmes (ACD): The same as LotR and Star Trek TOS & TNG.

Sherlock Holmes (2009): RDJ fangirls and people who don't care about the ACD canon.

Sherlock (BBC): People who haven't actually read the ACD canon, but act like they're experts on it.

Elementary, Steven Universe, and Dragon Age: SJWs.

A:TLA, Kingdom Hearts, and Harry Potter: Batshit insane shippers.

Sleepy Hollow: Batshit insane shippers who are also SJWs.

Supernatural: Tinhatters, people who prefer style over substance, and people who claim to be fans of "Judeo-Christian" mythos but only ever write fic/meta that relates to the "Christian" part of the equation.

Sailor Moon and Transformers: Adults who have fond memories of watching the original show in their childhood and are very, very offended by the reboot(s).

Merlin and Teen Wolf: People who don't give a shit about canon and are in fandom mostly for the fic.

Hetalia: Immature obnoxious weeaboos who only care about teh buttsecks, and pretentious self-proclaimed academics who leave bitchy tl;dr comments on inoffensive plotless fluff fics.

Naruto: People who haven't watched much anime that isn't mainstream shonen.

Attack on Titan and Bleach: People who used to like Naruto but gave up on it and needed another show to fill the void.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Breaking Bad, and the Nolan Batman films: Pretentious people.

Star Wars (Original Trilogy): Whiny entitled fanboys.

Star Wars (Prequels): People who don't like the original trilogy.

Hannibal: Creeps.

Game of Thrones: Assholes.

My Little Pony: Creepy assholes.

Any movie Tim Burton has had any involvement in: "Hi my name is Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way and I have long ebony black hair (that's how I got my name) with purple streaks and red tips that reaches my mid-back and icy blue eyes like limpid tears and a lot of people tell me I look like Amy Lee (AN: if u don't know who she is get da hell out of here!)."

I think with ACD Sherlock, Star Trek, and Tolkien, the thing is that there's still people coming in basically in the older way and, you know, interacting with those things in the same way that fans have for a long time. It's just that numerically they're sort of dwarfed by people who got into them through popular remakes and reinterpretations. Which of course is also fine, more fans is always good. Just that's my sense. Personally although I'm young I've been into all three since I was a kid and for much the same reason: I am a horrible nerd, and basically lived in libraries during my childhood.

Agree on MLP.

LOL at the "Sleepy Hollow"/Tim Burton ones :p. Ah, yeah, I've definitely come across some fans fitting that description.

I do enjoy doing a bit of shipping here and there for "Sleepy Hollow", but I try to stay the hell away from the ship war crap and other drama in that fandom. I just want to have fun watching the show and enjoy the entertaining characters :).

Anime fans: proportionately more likely to be terrible and crazy

I was honestly surprised by the number of guys in the Sailor Moon fandom. Granted, I was 18 and fairly new to that section of the internet, but there you have it.

That Disney fans are romantics at heart.

That fans of martial arts movies don't care about the spiritual/lifestyle aspect, they just want to punch something/watch people punch something.
