Ewww. As a parent, I know that impulse to think you're your child's alpha and omega and they owe you everything, but in fact once you bring them into this world, they're an autonomous being.

Apparently it's an old saying parents use when their kid is acting up. Because that really convinces people of your parenting skills. "I can't control you so I'll just threaten murder."

It's supposed to guilt them into thinking they owe their parents everything including their compliance.

Really? I always thought it was a semi-serious threat (semi-serious as in you know they won't follow through, but it's still meant to be a threat). Then again, my parents didn't threaten, they promised.

They never said stupid shit like this, though.

I feel like it's all in the delivery. When I've heard it, it's definitely said in a humorous mood. It always made me laugh and I'd come back with some similarly snarky response.
