The law still respects primary attachment theory, which most of the time means that children live primarily with the mother until school age. The need to breastfeed is also respected.
Even though the "best interests of the child" presumes 50/50 time with both/all parents, once they are of school age, there's still a lot of fathers out there who are convinced that the law is against them. In practice a lot of fathers get less time where there is conflict and separation that reaches the court system (there's mediation first), because of violence or sexual abuse against the ex-spouse and/or children, because the father has eschewed responsibility, or has no fixed address. What the parents have been doing with their kids before separation sets a precedent for how much time they spend with the children afterwards, and it's remarkable how many fathers who didn't give a shit before suddenly want as much time with the children afterwards as a way to get back at the mother.
Hell, we are *so* equal here that known sexual abusers of their kids (which are 98% men) get time to spend with them - with provisos like "locks on the doors" when overnighting with them, etc.
There's been many cases in Australia where men kidnap their children when in custody of their exes, and kill them. Or kill the mothers. Or both. Hardly ever happens the other way round. Because the law saying that violent fathers don't deserve to have more than limited access to their children/exes is just so fucking unfair. And you know how I was talking about MRA activist aggrieved fathers who banded together and started stalking and threatening violence against mothers who didn't have a male partner? Because they were all about equality hahahah ah yep.
