But which is a better character. Max or the Man With No Name.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
both are pillars of shit sculpted into a generic male power fantasy. Give me a character with some fucking emotional depth, please.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Lacking emotional depth is not intrinsically a bad thing. Character study is not the only kind of story.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nux. He was the only character with emotional depth in the film. Furiosa was a "generic female power fantasty" but of course people like you probably ate that up.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh yeah, I enjoyed the female power fantasy but Nux was the best part of the whole thing

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding the enjoyment of the female power fantasy.

Even if her character wasn't particularly deep, it wasn't boring. Power fantasies aren't automatically bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
some are. It depends who is the target.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
wah wah men are inherently terrible or something

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
wah wah i'm so paranoid about the scary manhaters i'm reading things in that aren't even there.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Give me an example of power fantasy you think should not exist. Something done these last few years.

Game of thrones.

The latest conan movie.

Mad max.

Every Batman film.

Metal gear solid.

Most comics from the main two.

There's a new James Bond coming out soon. We still live in a world where James bond can still be made.

Not familiar with Conan enough to comment.

The first Mad Max is a revenge movie. 2-4 are about a guy helping people. Max never sexually harasses anyone nor does he kill people just cuz. The latest movie is about trying to remove five women from sexual slavery. Not a bad power fantasy.

Batman really needs to see someone for his issues, but he protects the weak. The only skeevy thing he does with love interests is pretend Batman and Bruce are two different people. However, if he does decide to date them he eventually reveals his identity. Having gadgets and near unlimited wealth to stop things like murder, theft, etc. Not a bad power fantasy.

Metal Gear. Wanting to be as competent as Snake is not a bad power fantasy. However, I really doubt anyone actually wants to BE Snake. The guy has suffered way too much tragedy.

I haven't read the Conan or Mad Max comics.

James Bond is moving away from it's roots of a guy who smoked 50 cigarettes a day and went through women almost as quickly. If you focus on the secret agent who gets to travel the world and stop bad guys, not a bad power fantasy. The sexism on the other hand, yeah, ew.

Never mind that Daniel Craig's Bond is the most androsexualized Bond ever. He's not just good looking, he's openly paraded as beefcake. Casino Royale features a call back to the Ursula Andress scene in Dr. No but it's BOND who's taking that position and who is also repeating a reference to the Venus de Milo. The male hero is the primary sex focus in these films.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe people ate it up because it's rare to see "generic female power fantasy" (LOL!) that's done so well.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
well ofc, considering that "generic male power fantasy" are freaking everywhere and boring as shit
(also, I think she has emotional depth, but ymmv)

There's a chip on your shoulder and it's big as a boulder.

I think max is a little too damaged to be much of a fantasy. Nobody really wants to see their failures as hallucinations giving them shit.

Explain how, exactly, being captured by Imorton Joe's minions, being used as a blood bag, joining Furiosa's crusade because there's really no other choice and aiding her in becoming the new queen of the oasis is a male power fantasy?

Nah.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Bzzzzzzzzt. Generic Male Power Fantasy would involve fucking at least one or more of the scantily clad ladies, who would fall in love with you (and your mighty gun!) just for being there. Rarely does the GMPF involve a woman who kicks more ass then you without 1) showing her tits and 2) being the one who bones you or who dies before she can bone you.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
You didn't see the movie, did you? Considering Max spends all of Fury Road not exactly feeling powerful or in control, I'm not sure how he is anyone's "generic power fantasy."

(Anonymous) 2015-10-10 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
(AYRT) Hard to say. I'm much fonder of Max, but (especially if you take The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly as a prequel to the Dollars trilogy) I feel like MWNN has better/more consistent characterisation.
