Is Until Dawn considered a good horror game or, like, cheese? I'm halfway through it and it's very entertaining and the graphics are cool, but some tropes are so tired. And is that a rip-off of The Saw franchise? :D

I thought it was suppose to be pretty cheesy and while I find the atmosphere creepy, I don't find it scary. But from what I've read online, some people are considering it to be one of the scariest games they've ever played. :\a

I see! Thanks. I agree that it's creepy and I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm not scared, either. And that's saying a lot, because I'm very easily scared by modern psychological horror. In fact, I picked up Until Dawn to try and remedy the fact.

But some parts of it look so deliberately unimaginative and laughter-inducing. RADIOACTIVE CANNIBAL MINERS.

I think this is what's meant by "beer and pretzels" horror. You're supposed to play it with your buddies and laugh uproariously when someone dies. (Though I don't recommend actual beer, given the quicktime events.)

If you're only half way through you haven't even gotten to the twist. Keep going.

I think I know what the twist is, and I really like the idea!

It's definitely meant to be cheesy IMO. I thought that it was supposed to be making fun of tropes associated with tacky horror films, particularly slasher films of the 80s and (as you noted) all the Saw clones of the 00s. People who think it's the scariest game ever are probably either major horror newbies, or they have a genuine phobia or something that the game is inadvertently playing into.

It does get a bit creepier after the first half.

One of my friends just bought that game and loves it. He says very little scares him but this game makes him tense up.

However, it's all super subjective. I don't know that you can really point to a game and say "this one's the SCARIEST" simply because as human beings, we have different buttons and different ways of experiencing fear. What is terrifying for you may be boring for someone else and vice-versa.

As for popular opinion? No idea.
