Re: Question thread!

Last night I had a bunch of disturbing dreams involving my brother. First, we were in a relationship, then we broke up, then we were just hanging out and the previous relationship stuff didn't exist, then suddenly we were in a relationship again, then we were just having sex but not in a relationship, then we fought about something and then we were having sex again. I'd wake up after one of them, be really freaked out, then go back to sleep and proceed to go right into another one. That happened ALL NIGHT LONG.

Aside from the obvious WTF-ness of it being my brother, I'm not even into GUYS. Also, he's a total asshole that I try to spend as little time with as possible, and probably one of my least favorite people on the planet. If I'm going to dream about sexy times with a dude why couldn't it at least be someone I don't hate?

Anyone that knows anything about dreams, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??

It means dreams are weird and sometimes your subconscious likes to freak you out.

lol, this. I've experienced it too - not sex dreams about my brother *shudder* but just weird bizarre shit I'd never tell anyone. Which is saying something because there's not a lot I keep completely private.

According to dreammoods.com

To dream of incestuous practices signifies erotic desires. It may also be representative of the union between feminine and masculine aspects of yourself. You are at a phase in your life where you are not quite a child and not quite an adult, and thus this dream may be symbolic of the merging of the child and adult within yourself. Alternatively, if you have been arguing with this family member and are expressing your desire to make up, then the dream may be trying to depict forgiveness in an extreme way.

(I don't know why it assumes your age, but there you go.)

I disagree.

Wow, no. That's a big pile of, "most probably not."

There could be anxiety about how you've become so estranged from someone with the same parents, entangled with various fears (possibly of heteronormativity, for example).

But the specifics here are at best darts that will mostly miss.

It means you need to roofie your brother and fuck him. Then the dreams will go away.

It maybe means you have a lot of emotions connected to your brother and your brain chose a really weird/fucked up way to process them.

I do NOT think it means you secretly want to have sex with him or something.

Dreams really don't "mean" anything. Sometimes when your brain comes across a really taboo subject, it's like a car wreck, you just can't look away so end up obsessing over it even though you're trying desperately not to think about it. I imagine the subconscious has a similar interest, except zero inhibitions at all.

This is a good answer. This is your brain getting caught in a loop of imagining something you fear and hate.

And you have to let that obsession collapse, or die, or fade out, whatever metaphor works for you, and get on with your life. Don't let it eat you up.

Freud believed all characters in your dream represent an aspect of yourself (not your feelings about those people IRL). So you could look at it from that angle.

Freud's work on dreams pisses me off. He didn't seem to understand that subconscious obsessions can as be driven by fear and hatred as likely as by desire. A lot of patients have suffered for that oversight.
