But... it's canon....

No?? It's very famously NOT canon, which has been a source of angst for many generations of fans :D

I mean, it doesn't necessarily contradict the canon, but it's definitely not there.

Ah crap. It's so ubiquitously fanon that it's just sunk into my mind as actually being CANON. I could have sworn it was referenced in the world war one story he wrote!! Ah well, my mistake. *shakes head*

No wonder! I've never met a fan who didn't accept this as their headcanon. It's probably THE most pervasive headcanon in the entirety of the classic SH fandom.

(not that I mind. It's very sweet.)

It actually does contradict canon a bit, if we go by a line from the beginning of "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane," in which a mostly-retired Holmes says:

At this period of my life the good Watson had passed almost beyond my ken. An occasional weekend visit was the most I ever saw of him. Thus I must act as my own chronicler.

I haven't read anywhere near all of ACD's Holmes stories, so for all I know this line could be contradicted in an even later Holmes story. But I kind of doubt it?

Which makes me sad, because I ship these two like burning and consider it necessary for the sake of my emotional well-being that they retire together. Oh well, that's what headcanon is for. *sigh*

Well, it does say "at this period of my life", not "from then on Watson and I grew apart and were never close again". This line is not contradicted in any later stories, but it's not like this couldn't change in the extracanonical timeline.

Yeah, it's not set in stone. They may have gotten back into the habit of seeing each other more after this. But realistically, I think it's unlikely. For two elderly men to have grown so much apart that Holmes would say Watson was "almost beyond his ken," and to evidently be living at some distance from each other, seems likely to be fairly final.

I think ACD probably wrote "at this period of my life" not to imply there would be a later period where they grew close again, but just to let the audience know that Holmes was writing of a later period of his life, when Watson was no longer around much.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I don't headcanon them as having retired together. But there's definitely wiggle room!
