That would be really shocking/a good plot twist if it happened in the modern era of the show, but it seems like it's become such an institution and that the BBC must make a big deal of leading up to who the new Doctor will be, and the first reveal photos (remember when Matt Smith was dressed like Nine? Good times), and then the promotional photos in costume, and the countdown to the new doctor's episodes, and then also saying goodbye to the current doctor. It seems like they've got the process down to such a science that they would object to having to do everything secretly/undercover to suddenly kill the Doctor off.
