50 Shades of Grey

(Anonymous) 2015-10-11 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone here actually read the book cover to cover? Is it really as badly written as it's said to be?

I've heard the writing is worse than Twilight, but I find that hard to imagine.

I've read snarky reviews that quote extensively, and from what they quoted, it seemed pretty dang embarrassing.

Do you happen to have links to any of those reviews?

I had to do a whole bunch of searching, I don't remember all of them, but I'm pretty sure this was one that I enjoyed:

They definitely have plenty of excerpts, for full cringe effect.

Jenny Trout did awesome scathing recaps, chapter by chapter. Just google her name.

It's way worse than Twilight. Even ignoring the content and focusing on writing styles exclusively, FSOG makes Twilight look pretty good by comparison.

I haven't read it all, though I did read quite a lot of it back when it was "Master of the Universe" aka the Twilight fic it started out as. I tried to pick it up once back when it first came out, and couldn't finish it (Also I couldn't let go of the feeling that I had read it before, which it turned out I had)

From what I remember the Twilight roots are still there. There is the Bella, the Edward, the Jacob and the Rosalie. A lot of still just felt really Twilight like, just worse. It also doesn't help that it is written by a Brit trying to sound American.

I wonder how it compares as a fanfic. Obviously the fanfic was popular, but that doesn't say much about writing ability.

I haven't read the book, but I also heard the "Americanisms" were really awkward and it very much sounded like a British person trying and failing to sound American.

Is a copy of the fic still circulating?

According to a plagiarism thingie for school papers they are a 89 % match, where a lot of those 11 % that are not matching would be name changes.

No cover to cover - got half way through before the bad reading made me unable to continue. Now I can't compare it to Twilight cause I've never read THAT book, but man, 50 Shades really is shockingly bad. Tons of inconsistencies, purple prose, clunky awkward dialogue, you name it.

listen to the Mark Reads version on youtube

yes, it's much worse, and each book in the trilogy tops the last for terribleness
