Plus fandom in general tends to have more good ficcers than good artists.

That being said, people who draw well sometimes can't write for shit. One of the manga series that got me into the medium is a collaboration between author and artist and geez, I can definitely understand (after looking at the artist's later works) why they paired up with a writer.
