So, what are you guys intending to nominate? Or hoping someone else will nominate?

PLEASE let there be someone interested in writing Murder Rooms!! Otherwise, I will nom this fandom until the universe implodes.

I'm also thinking about requesting The Graveyard Book now that I saw it in the tag set. I have some awesome plotbunnies for it.

How does this work?

Yuletide is a small fandom fic exchange. You pick 3 to 6 fandoms from the tag set you'd like fic in. You also need to pick at least 2 characters from each fandom you'd like fic for (unless you pick "any" which can mean no characters or all characters).

You also offer to write fic for 4+ fandoms. Then you're assigned to write one 1000+ word fic for the fandom and characters you were matched on. (Also, note that requests are AND matching while offers are OR matching).

There are supplemental stuff you can participate in but basically you're just obligated to write one fic and you will get one fic. It's a lot of fun. :)

Oh I need to go through this. I've never participated in one of these, but I already see a few I'd happily give someone a fic for.

I forgot about Yuletide! If the tag set is open, that means the nominations are over, aren't they?

Of two fandoms I'm really into right now one got in, but my fav character isn't in the tag list; the other wasn't accepted, though that's being challenged right now (and I like the characters nominated, so there's some hope).
I guess I'll have to wait before deciding whether I'll participate.

I just...I don't understand. I see the tag sets. I see the LJ post. I still don't understand, and it's the most anxiety inducing thing that's happened to me in a long time.

Like, I literally want to cry about not understanding.

Okay, right now the tag set is up. So, just look through it to see if you like any of the fandoms and the characters nominated. If you can find at least 3 fandoms you'd like a gift for and at least 4 fandoms you could write in, then you can participate! (Fandoms can overlap, so you can write and get a fic in the same fandom.)

That's all you have to do right now. Sign-ups will come in a week or so. I'll definitely put up a post here when that time comes. I know that last year, someone made a vid showing how to do a sign-up. I can help you through that too when the time comes. Right now, just look for fandoms and characters you'd like to read or write.

Does that make sense?

OK, so right now it's just making personal lists based on fandoms and characters that are provided. So, if I like show A, but I don't care about the characters listed there, I probably don't want to do anything with Show A. But what if I like Show B and like one character listed in Show B but hate the others? Is that just a risk you take (or not)?

In show A's case, you could still ask for it with no characters and then you can ask for the things you'd like a fic instead of the nominated characters but your writer will be matching on one of the characters in the list and isn't obligated to write you the thing you want. So, it's probably better to pick a different fandom if you have one.

For show B, you do select the characters you want. So, you definitely can ask for just that one character and your writer is obligated to write about that character. There's a place in the sign-up form where you can say you'd rather not have the other characters included at all (if you really do hate them) and most writers will do their best to accommodate you if you're polite about it. But, it is good to remember that on the offering side, the writers are offering OR matching so they might have offered to write a character you didn't pick in addition to the one you did so it's good not to bash any characters.

When offering fandoms, you do need at least 2 characters you can write so that's something to keep in mind. But you can definitely just pick one character when getting a fic. :)

What does offering OR matching, mean?

It means that if you pick Character A and Character B in your fandom, you are offering to write Character A OR Character B. You might end up getting both or either of them. But as a recipient, you are asking for someone to write you a fic with Character A AND Character B.

So, let's say there are four people asking for the fandom and they ask for
1) A B C
2) A D
3) B
4) A B

You can be matched with 3 and 4 because you offered A or B. You cannot be matched with 1 or 2 because you didn't offer C or D. The person who wanted 1 will have to match with someone who offers all three of those characters, so the more characters you ask for, the harder your match might be. Something to keep in mind. :)
