While I haven't done something at this scale myself, I did find that making a private writing Tumblr to be great for my own writing. On it I write as if I were talking to an audience of followers as well as just having it as an archive for plotting original story things, and at times it has really helped to just fill in some plot holes and stuff like that by just writing "aloud" what I'm thinking.

So do whatever works for you, anon!

This, so much. I think you just phrased it perfectly. I used to have betas for plotting (and in fact, still do like having betas for the longer stories) but oftentimes an echo chamber is good enough, especially when there's no fandom. Plus it's nice to have something to reference when you're stuck on plot, etc., and there's a level of privacy and immediacy that neither tumblr nor LJ/DW can provide.
