Re: Complain about things: a thread

I'm on a writing skype group and lately there's this one user whose bullshit has been pissing me off. They have a tendency to try to be harsh which would be one thing except they aren't helpful in their harshness. Just harsh. ("that's a stupid idea" "why?" "I shouldn't have to tell you that")

Like recently one of my friends who I introduced to the group showed her writing for review and this one user was in an asshole mood that day and pretty much told her that her work (and original fic) was 'basically glorified fanfiction" . My friend was ...well pretty embarrassed and discouraged but I asked them to explain their accusations and what made it "glorified fanfiction.

They got testy and kept on about how they were being "honest" and "truth hurt" I wasn't silencing them but asking them to explain their criticism. All I eventually got was something about it being "ego masturbation" . Which is..well "wat even". The rest of us thought it was just fine.

We're pretty sure we don't want this person in the group anymore and we tried confronting them about it. Now they're being a big martyr about how "wronged" they've been and asking for an apology.

I honestly hope they plan on flouncing before we can kick them out. There's blunt criticism....and then there's being harsh but unable to actually be helpful.

Is anyone in charge of this group? If so, they need to deal with it. If not, I'd just kick the person out before (s)he flounces. Especially as there's always the chance someone else will get tired of the mess and leave. :/

This person sounds pretentious as fuck. I wouldn't feel guilty showing them the door.

Wow, that's just blatantly rude. From where I'm sitting it sounds like you've got every reason to kick this person out of the group right now, tbh.

Wow that person's rude.

Also maybe this is me being particular about words but, calling it "glorified fanfiction" because its supposedly "egotistical" is...well kind of false.

That's not what fan-fiction means. Fan-fiction is a derivative work. There are plenty of "self masturbatory"/"egoistical" original works.

Wow, I think you found a future creative writing professor.
