Sentinel/Guide Trope
(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 01:30 am (UTC)(link)Re: Sentinel/Guide Trope
(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 03:31 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, it's originally based off the series The Sentinel. Fandom took the basic premise and a couple of throwaway lines, extrapolated a LOT from some mysticism that was in all of two or three eps, and ran with it.
Basic premise - there are people with enhanced senses, and those with all five enhanced are called Sentinels.
There's a quick line in an early ep about Jim (the MC with enhanced senses) needing someone to help him learn how to control his senses. This line is delivered by Blair, the PhD student studying the Sentinel "myth" so two guesses who volunteers to help in the next breath.
Plus, there's some vaguely nonsensical "spirit animal" stuff in a couple of eps which culminates in Blair nearly drowning and Jim's spirit animal jumping into Blair's and the merging apparently reviving Blair?
The first bit got turned into the idea that Sentinels need a Guide (which now comes with bonus powers or something, because fic), and the second bit got turned into the "magical soul connection" part of the trope. =P
