As long as it's not convenient coincidence and wacky hijinks

If the characters acknowledge IC that they are intentionally not talking and then regret it later and realize they messed up, I think it's fine

It's the lololcoincidences that makes it unbearable

Yeah that's what I thought.

I have a character who doesn't want to talk to his friend about something out of stubbornness and resentment, and his sister frequently tries to advise him to just talk to the guy.

Said friend also doesn't seem to understand why his friend is suddenly distant and cool.
