well it sounds like they're turning to fanfic anyway... so they could read anything they want

It can still sour people on existing het ships in canon or even on het ships in general. If a ship/character dynamic doesn't appeal to me in canon, I'm not going to seek out fic for it in the hopes that the fic writers make that dynamic more interesting.
