sometimes I think that a part of the nowadays slash fans trend is the evolution/heir of the 'unconventional couples fans' trend that was common years ago in, mostly, het fandoms (anyone remember the fanforum?).
It's possible that for many slashers the main appeal is the fact that the ship is NOT canon and thus the idea of going against canon and the 'norm', which might explain why canon gay couples are less popular than non canon slash ships.
