The action movies of those times seem a lot more fun to me than the majority of the stuff that came later.

What went wrong?

The loss of practical effects, I think, is a large contributing factor. I mean, real explosions are so much more awesome than CGI. YOUR BRAIN KNOWS THE DIFFERENCE! Also, the fact that Hollywood makes most action movies now "gritty" and dire as opposed to fun. There's less humor overall, including the recognition of the humor inherent in the ridiculousness of the plot of many action films and of most of the stunts performed. (NOT ENOUGH CAMP!) This is why a movie like a Fury Road was so successful - it harkened back to the good old days of practical effects and over-the-top ridiculousness. This is why I reccomend movies like the Fast and Furious series. Those films don't take themselves seriously at all and are fun.

Especially the 80s rule on camp. When Stallone kicked a tire you knew you'd get EXPLOSIONS! ALL! OVER! TOWN!

Oh yeah. I reccomend The A-Team series to everyone in this thread. EVERYTHING EXPLODES!
