Question About Weight

(Anonymous) 2015-10-16 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm female, and I recently entered college. Before I entered, I was 144 lbs. In about three weeks, I have gone down to 130 lbs. I'm not dieting. I have just completely lost my appetite. I try to eat regularly, but I definitely don't eat as much as before. I like being thinner, but I'm concerned that I'm losing weight too quickly.

Should I be concerned?

Yeah, you're only supposed to lose 2 pounds a week and you're a little over 4.

What's a typical day, food-wise look for you?

Well, yesterday, I ate a bar for breakfast. For lunch, I had a sandwich and a salad. For dinner, I had pasta, a salad, and an ice cream bar. That's pretty typical for me.

I used to eat a lot of snacks too, but I just don't feel hungry anymore. I also exercise 4 times a week, and I probably walk around 60 minutes a day because my classes are far from my apartment if that helps.

Maybe it has to do with stress/anxiety? That can affect the appetite, but in that case you need to think about dealing with the root of the issue, and then hopefully the appetite will take care of itself.

On its own, I wouldn't immediately say that there's something to worry about. If you're eating when you're hungry and eating healthy, it's okay to sometimes have less of an appetite. But definitely consider other contributing factors, and whether you're getting enough sleep and have enough energy during the day.

Yeah, I have been sleeping less, and I am kind of stressed out because I'm so busy with school. I think I'll probably just try to eat more? That should help.

I'm not sure I would advise forcing yourself to eat more than you think you need. I'd probably say the best thing atm is to try and get a feel for your body and what it wants?
You said that you're exercising and stuff, which is great. Really try to see what will make you feel the best, and try to stay healthy.

I wouldn't be. This happened to me when I started college too. It's your body getting used to new food, walking around a lot more around campus, new stressors, etc. The more you get used to the environment, the more things will even out.

Oh, that's good to here! I hope that's the case!

How tall are you? I ask because if you're like 5'1" and 145 while snacking all day at home and dropping to 130 while not snacking at college, that's a different situation to being 145 and 5'9" to start with. The former has more weight-to-height to lose in the first place

If you started off comparatively short and comparatively overweight, cutting out snacks could easily make you drop a lot of excess weight

I'm 5'7, so I wasn't overweight. Just "average." That's why I was a little concerned.

Depends. Is your mind completely somewhere else? I remember losing 31 pounds without trying (well, okay, within 6-7 months), but food definitely wasn't on my mind because I was so busy, and when I did eat, I wasn't overdoing it.

If not much in your life has changed, your stress levels/fun levels/work/etc is relatively the same, you might want to at least talk to a doctor.

Losing weight too quickly isn't "good" in the sense that you probably aren't going to keep it off. Stress, even subconscious stress, and excitement, can affect one's appetite. Chances are once you've adjusted a bit, you'll gain a little bit of the weight back. But I wouldn't worry as long as you're getting enough calories/nutrients, or if you start to become underweight. Your body will adjust, and maybe it'll adjust to something a little lighter if you're having a major lifestyle change, but yeah, you haven't really "reset" your natural body weight if you lose a lot of weight suddenly.

Most likely not, unless being 130lbs is underweight for you.

Stress will cause weight fluctuation, and you will most likely even out over the summer.

It might honestly just be because of all the change you're going through. I'd look and see if it continues. Also keep an eye out for anything else out of the ordinary in case it's a symptom of anything else. Doesn't hurt to see if your campus has a free clinic you could go to! (Obviously I am not qualified to give actual medical advice.)

Increased stress and more physical activity is probably the cause, if you feel okay otherwise. Right now, I wouldn't try to cram more food down or anything, but do make sure that what you eat is nutritionally well rounded. Basically, you're eating fewer calories, so make sure they're not empty ones. What you described downthread sounds reasonable, and as you get used to college life it will probably balance out in the end.

Take a look at what you're eating, not just how often, and make sure you're getting enough nutrition.

Also, if you're stressed enougn that you're having trouble sleeping and have little apetite, go talk to a counselor at your student clinic. That's what they're there for, and believe me, they're going to be used to helping people adjust to the stresses of college life.

Stress makes me lose weight because I lose my appetite; when you fall into more of a routine and get more comfortable you'll get your appetite back, if that's the case.

I think most people imagine that people eat more when they're under stress, so it's an obvious enough cause that's commonly overlooked.

I think that as long as you're eating (and it sounds like you're doing so much more healthily than most first-time college students), you're fine. Cutting out snacks and exercising more is likely doing it, so I wouldn't be too worried right now.

Most people put on weight when they go off to college (the infamous "freshman twenty"), so I'm glad you're avoiding that. :) I gained it, but that's because I had an unlimited food pass and could eat whatever I wanted after being raised on "can't have dessert if you don't finish your plate".
