Characters brought in mid-stream

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-10-17 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What are your favorite or least favorite examples of characters brought in specifically to spice up a show?

Worf in DS9. He did it so well, the Dominion War arc would not have worked as well as it did if it wasn't for Worf Klingoning it all up.

Oh, yes, Worf is a good example too. I actually preferred him on DS9 to TNG. He worked better with that crew for me.

I was thinking about this because I've been on a lawyer show binge and found myself watching Harry's Law where Mark Valley was brought in as Oliver Richard for season 2.

And this reminded me of my least favorite example of this: Body of Proof where Mark Valley was brought in as Tommy Sullivan. That show was great in the first season and then they got rid of the most interesting male character and replaced him with Sullivan who was just annoying.

A favorite, on the other hand, would be Seven of Nine. I didn't always love what they did with her character, but I did love her.

McGee really boosted the cuddly cute guy quotient when he was brought onto NCIS as a regular just saying.

Cheryl Blossom is the ultimate example of throwing a wrench in a love triangle. And that is why she's awesome.

I hated most of the interns (?) brought in on House after the original three were scattered. And the ones I did like died. :(

I still maintain that House, Foreman, Kutner, and Amber would have been the dream team.

I thought that Taub would be interesting because of how ruthlessly he behaved but he was actually boring and stupid. :(

I'm actually the opposite. The original three were good and Chase will always have a special place in my heart but after they left I realised that I found them pretty forgettable. On the other hand, I really really liked the interns. Though I already know that's an unpopular opinion, I was horrified when I found out my baby Thirteen was hated in the fandom.

I loved Amber. I was so mad about her.

She was amazing, I think her last episode was probably the final pinnacle of House.

Barbara Windsor in the Carry On movies, also Sid James in the Carry On movies too. Both brought the sexy.

This is probably both the oldest and most British comment we've ever had on F!S.

I cannot imagine Carry On without Sid James, I didn't realise he was added later? But gosh, that's like not having Kenneth Williams. Those two may as well be the faces of the franchise.

Also, yay for Carry On love on F!S!!!

Does Ben Linus count? He was supposed to be a brief role but he nailed his first appearance so well that they were like 'oh hell we're keeping this guy' and became one of the best parts of the damn thing overall.

My least favorite is from the Star Wars tie in novel Death Troopers, where it starts off *great* with this sci fi zombie apocalypse thing with characters that can literally die anytime... and then midway through to hook the fans, Han and Chewie show up and all the tension that had been built goes right out the window. Because you know nobody has the nerve to go full Inglorious Basterds on that.
fearlessfirefly: Sayid and Charlie's actors from LOST, listening to their personal music players, and looking adorable as they do so. ([LOST] sayid & charlie jamming out)

Yay for Ben Linus ♥

I'll also add Daniel Faraday, because he's my special science babe and he totally owned all that time travel stuff.

Replacing Mark with Ben & Chris in Parks and Rec was a good choice.

Craig is good too.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you on the Ben and Chris thing. Mark wasn't a bad character exactly; he just stopped fitting in with the show as it continued. Ben and Chris definitely worked better

Sideswipe in Transformers Armada. Both upping the adorable bot quotient, and adding the heart to the team.

Well, i stopped watching OUAT because Hook made me nauseous. The show as a whole has gone down the tubes, but it also sucks because his actor is really talented and seems like a nice person, but I probably won't be able to watch him in other stuff.

I hate how they are trying to play it like he was never really evil along. Although both he and Regina have had issues with the idea of consent in the past (he was clearly guilty of sexual harassment at least and she clearly raped Graham). At least with Regina, though, they don't forget her past (except for Graham). She's still known as the evil queen and everyone acknowledges that she did bad things. With Hook it is like everyone has just forgotten and it bugs me. Not enough to quit because I'm a sucker for fairy tale related things and fantasy on tv. But I really hate him. I wish he'd stayed evil. I liked him when he was evil.

Re: Characters brought in mid-stream

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, for most of the recurring cast Hook would've been at most a blip on the radar, whereas Regina screwed up pretty much everyone's lives even before she cast a curse that kept them suspended in monotonous misery for the better part of three decades. It's a lot easier to gloss over the actions of someone you know intellectually has done some nefarious shit than it is to gloss over the actions of someone who's hurt you and everyone you know personally and repeatedly.

I loved Ray K on Due South a lot (although I also loved the Ray that he replaced)

What was it...season 2 of Bones, that Jack of Trades dude was interested in Brennan? HATED. HIM.

Though in hind sight, even though I shipped Booth/Bones liek whoa, may doodle from season 2 would have been best with her anyway. :/
