MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is fandom!secrets so batshit crazy about MRAs? I once wrote a post expressing nothing more controversial than that men's rights and women's rights weren't mutually exclusive and got accused of, among other things, false-flagging for the MRAs, got told to kill myself, was impersonated by another anon who asked Case to close the thread, and had triggering images posted in the thread.

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The present context for the usage of the term 'MRA' is this:

1) Someone responds to a reasonable opinion (usually one that could be construed as criticizing a woman on any grounds whatsoever, or that could be construed as positive about men in general or any individual man, etc) by calling the person who said it an MRA, almost certainly as a means of intentionally trolling

2) Everyone on F!S rushes to point out that this is ridiculous & to repudiate the remark in the strongest possible terms.

So, you know, you got trolled hard by whichever fucking dickhead it is who keeps doing it. And I really am sorry about it, because it does suck.

Er, sorry, the present context for use of the term MRA on F!S specifically*

I can guarantee you that 90% of the threads on here about sexism are not created by people who genuinely give a fuck about sexism. You can tell by the way they're written.

They are created by trolls. Stop feeding them.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I've seen some very obvious troll threads. I tend to think a lot of replies to those are other trolls trying to make the thread more incendiary, or people who feel that because they think the OP is a troll, any response is justified.

My post clearly isn't trolling. But like the anon above me said, I consistently see neutral threads go up in flames because someone or other is accused of being an MRA.

Calling me an MRA (in the way they mean it, I do believe men deserve rights) is laughable. I'm as ardent a feminist as they come.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
The trolls are the people who are calling people MRAs

Of course it's laughable, it's not meant to be sincere, because it is a troill

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
MRA's are bad people. It's bad to be an MRA.

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also bad to be so immature that you think that anything that isn't your opinion must be an MRA.

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really just trolling or someone who's really immature and probably someone who's a bit radical.

It pisses me off too. Like seriously different opinions on this exist. if they're not a troll than they need to grow up and get some perspective.

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a troll, or one of several trolls. I've also been 'MRA detected' several times, which is laughable. It's just used as a quick and easy way to shut you down whenever you don't agree 100% with whatever topic the troll is currently espousing.

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-17 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE

It's gotten to the point where I roll my eyes whenever I see "MRA detected" unless the comment really comes off as an MRA.

They usually don't.

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
That's mega shitty.

Just more evidence that when people get a whiff of something that threatens them or makes them suspect a "toxic opinion" they go overboard in trying to shut it down, so much so that they do all sorts of nasty behavior that's just as bad as what they hate.

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hating MRA's is as bad as being an MRA?

NopeNopeNope

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Reframing people's arguments to extremes and grouping people into narrow divisive boxes is pretty lame though.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Funny that you read it that way.

What I meant to say is more that it;s shitty to react by doing the kind of things the OP mentioned , telling people to kill themselves, posting triggering images to troll the OP and pretending to be the OP to get a thread you don't agree with shut down.

Like it or not that's shitty and gross behavior all on a SUSPICION (that's based on a frankly immature motive ("they don't agree with me?I don't like what they're saying")

There's a huge difference between simply hating and disapproving of a mindset, and going overboard on bullying (yes that behavior OP describes is fucking BULLYING) and silencing someone the moment you suspect "OMG MRA MRA MRA".

There is a huge difference.

and if you think what happened to the OP is acceptable to do to people the moment you disagree with them? You need to GROW THE FUCK UP.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
it's trolling, mate

they want the reply you're giving them

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
DON'T. FEED. THE. MOTHERFUCKING. TROLLS.

Do not reply to concern-trolling posts about feminism. Do not reply to posts about MRAs, orr "Is this sexist...?" or "A friend of a friend did this thing, I swear I'm not making this up guys..." or "Hypothetical (loaded) question!"

It's so fucking transparent it's painful and you guys KEEP FUCKING REPLYING. I'm sick of scrolling through threads of thousands of comments just because you people are too stupid to detect trolling and you keep taking the bait.

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
i get what you're saying and i've tried getting people not to reply before, but other people hook line and sinker into bait every single time that it's just not worth telling people

it's never gonna change

and if that's the case i might as well join the ride

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but you can just ignore it yourself, you odnt have to make it actively worse

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
half of the threads are equal rights bait

hard to ignore and i love wasting time

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that the person in the rant thread was OMG OBVIOUSLY TROLLING ,and the automatic assumption they were was immature bullshit "this doesn't agree with my worldview. IT'S FAKE"

Why don't we think about what the actual harm in believing the OP would have caused (NONE except for bruising certain people's little egos) vs the harm caused by a dozen assholes telling them they're an MRA making it up or their feelings of being infringed upon aren't valid and they should have done more against the person (who already didn't care about boundaries) if they wanted to be taken seriously.

(TBH the way people in that thread treated OP was just as sexist as anything I've seen actual MRAs or sexists do.)

Eh if people are having fun and enjoy arguing, what harm does it do? I understand it's not something you like scrolling through or reading - but does it upset many others or make them likely to not want to come back? It doesn't upset me, but I can't always tell how emotionally invested others are when they argue.

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think it does upset others, especially when the wank turns into personal insults and shitflinging. We've had stalker trolls in this comm before who were downright creepy.

It also spreads misinformation and general stupidity.

Fair enough!

Re: MRAs

(Anonymous) 2015-10-18 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
still don't think MRAS do anything, hence not taking them seriously.

Are you serious want to grab it whole, this MRA? keep this thread every day isn't helping... i see NOTHING, NOTHING!!?
