I'm not too big on the fic side of things, but I've heard nothing but bad things about Ao3, and I had no idea people posted fic on tumblr til somewhat recently. Having said that, if tumblr meta is any indication of the quality of fics being put out, I can definitely imagine how incredibly frustrating it must be trying to find good quality reading material.

The thing is, ao3 used to be really good. But then the amount of meh fics just increased and nowadays I barely check it out.

To be honest, even if many people dislike it, for certain anime fandoms its fanfiction.net I find the best fic at today. At least the bad fic there is easy to find and easy to skip and the good stuff stands out more clearer.

AO3 is incredibly good to me and my smallish fandoms.

It really is a case of luck. Some fandoms have good stuff, other fandoms horrible fic.

It's not just the quality - imagine reading a fic in teeny tiny green text on a patterned dark background with music playing and animations lurking in corners.
Some people have absolutely no concept of readability.

To be fair, this was an issue on LJ as well.

Actually, in the long run, I think amateur website readability has gone up somewhat. Nowadays you probably won't run into neon green and purple, all-bolded text on a background that's a blurry stock gif animation of stars blinking around in space, while a blizzard of gifs featuring tap-dancing snowmen rains down the page and obscures allthe content.
Of course there are new trends of unreadability, such as font sizes that force you to zoom in at least 500% to read anything, or "clean" and "elegant" page layouts where things like "next page" links or the ability to scroll have been conveniently hidden so they don't get in the way of the aesthetic...

Yikes!!! Yeah, that's definitely terrible. I'd recommend using NoScript, since it does a good job with blocking blog music, but depending on the background used, it might make navigation a bit difficult.
