I've always found the idea of Ron the strategist questionable. Pretty much the only example of this is him playing chess. He doesn't really display that skill outside of the game.

Same. I'm definitely not trying to claim Ron doesn't contribute anything, but I don't think what he contributed was strategy. I'm trying to remember if he actually masterminded any of the major plays for the trio.

I always thought he was more the social part/Hart of the trio. He was always the one that talked to people outside the trio and whenever he wasn't there Harry and Hermione just stopped talking to each other.
