That isn't always an option for me because sometimes I follow WIP's, but if I'm looking to read a finished long-fic I typically do.

I haven't always done it, but I've been 'burned' in the past.

Bittersweet or depressing media itself I can usually deal with (and sometimes love), but if I'm reading shipping fic I probably want a happy ending. (Whatever 'happy' means for that particular pairing.) I have my moments where I'm fine with deathfic and the like, but it isn't often something I crave and I tend to avoid it.
