AYRT
I can see that. Expectation can really ruin a movie/show/book. There are several things I've watched/read that if I'd known nothing about them, I might've enjoyed them but they weren't what I was expecting so I didn't.

I feel like Crimson Peak (which I have not yet seen) is going to suffer from that. It sounds like it does have legitimate issues but a lot of the reviewers have said they weren't scared, but from what I've heard, it's not meant to be scary. I think the promos haven't helped it, making people think it's going to be a scary ghost story, so they'll be disappointed where they might not be otherwise.

I had NO idea what I was getting myself into when I watched Crimson Peak, other than the fact that I love del Toro's stuff. I think that definitely helped, otherwise I'd probably be very disappointed.

And it's weird to think that people were expecting something scary? A lot of del Toro's work excels in creating a dark, mysterious atmosphere with the occasional bloody scene, and I've never found it to be frightening. Then again, I also haven't seen any of the promo for it, so it's not fair of me to talk about being baffled at people's expectations.

You should look up the trailers then. From what I hear, they basically put all the ghosts scenes in there, and gave a very bad impression of what the movie would be. But then it sounds like it would be a hard movie to market. I think that's true of a lot of del Toro's movies.

The movie says what it is in the first 10 minutes! A gothic story, with ghosts, not a ghost story.

And yet, if you bought the ticket thinking it would be a ghost story, you will then be disappointed.
