The positives of Dreamwidth is that it has all the good things LJ used to have, plus it's ad free.

This is another reason why I'm still salty about DW not becoming as active as LJ. And it's kind of baffling, honestly!!

It is baffling. I mean look at Tumblr for example: it's flooded with advertisements now and the only way for it to go away is either uBlock or new-xKit.

Dreamwidth has the subject boxes we loved from old Livejournal and no advertisements, which makes it all the better for everyone (plus, no need for uBlock/Ad-block or any add-ons to make it navigable). Also, the staff on Dreamwidth really cares and listens, unlike the staff on either Tumblr or Livejournal.

Which is yet another reason why I'm still so confused about DW not quite taking off. Out of all the social networking websites I've been a part of, DW is pretty much the only one where I felt that the staff gave a flying fuck about the community (and implemented updates that made the website better). Granted, they have the luxury of a much smaller community of users, but I feel like they'd continue to do a good job even with a larger user base.

I have looked for years and have yet to find a DW skin that doesn't look pukealicious. I can't be bothered to make one myself. I have to actively avoid minding it here.

Ooph, yeah, good DW layouts are practically impossible to come by. I remember seeing this one post back in the day about getting LJ layouts to work here, but I've never managed to get it to work for me.

That being said, I've been using layouts from [community profile] vigils for some time now. They use a nice and minimal style, which I dig.

For me, I just go to [community profile] dreamwidthlayouts and find layouts by [community profile] tofuhouse, [community profile] inconformista and [community profile] dustier.

From my POV, one of the things that made LJ work was that a lot of us started out adding people from websites we went to, Yahoo Groups, etc. It was kind of the facebook of fandom. Whereas DW came along when no one was really trying to find a place to congregate. They just wanted LJ to not be shitty anymore.

Plus, there were a lot of big names on LJ who I think drew attention to the site, and then people wanted accounts so they could participate. I don't think that's been the case with DW.
