Writing Thread

So what is everyone working on? Have you come across a great idea? Worked through a writer's block? Are you looking for a new plot point? Share all your joys and concerns here!

I'll start. For the first time in my life, I've found a story idea I can see myself sticking with! I've been keeping it all organized and everything, and I'm so proud it's coming out so well! I've already written ~17k in two months; a new record for me! :)

Currently working on some worldbuilding before NaNo. At the moment I'm mostly focusing on political relations, both nationally and internationally, but I'm also slowing working out a religion. I'll also need to focus on some cultural things, like fashion, before November. I'm really having a lot of fun with it!

Steven Universe brainstorming

I have an idea for an SU fic, but it's so rough I don't even have the genre down yet. I got zero responses on Beach City Bugle, so I might as well ask for ideas here. At the very least, I need to determine which paths NOT to take the story down, figuring out a structure by process of elimination.

This will be long, so I'll put it in a reply.

Idea: Steven is how Connie knows and interacts with the Crystal Gems. Any relationships she might have with them are filtered through him. So how might they interact if Steven didn't exist?

* It would be harder to generate a conflict if Rose is around, so I'm leaning towards her being gone.
** My current idea is that giving Steven Rose's gem failed. The gem cracked in half, and both Steven and Rose died.

* This immediately removes Pearl as a positive connection for Connie. Pearl had a hard enough time with Rose dying. If she died pointlessly, Pearl would implode into a ball of hatred. She wouldn't want anything to do with another human. She might even give up hunting corrupted gems--why bother to protect humans from their threat?
** In a particularly actiony story, Pearl could become a villain with a grudge against humanity, but I'm not sure I want to go that route.

* Amethyst seems like the safest bet for a positive connection. She has a history of getting along with humans like Vidalia, and she'd want to keep hunting gem monsters, if only to have some way to let out her frustration and fight.
** If Connie was trapped or menaced by a monster, she could prove brave and resourceful in handling it, even without combat training. This would impress Amethyst and make a great first impression.
** However, Amethyst's combat style is a lot less suited to Connie than Pearl's, so I couldn't just swap Amethyst into Pearl's role. Rather than mentor and student, they'd be . . . Friends? Allies? Emotional crutches? I'm not sure exactly how their bond would work or what kind of story it would lead into.

* Garnet is a total mystery. Would she be angry at humans? Guilty for not seeing this coming? Could she even stay together, or would Ruby give in to rage while Sapphire fell to despair?
** Similarly, Connie's reaction to the introspective fistfighter could be anywhere between fear and adulation. I can't pare it down enough to determine an appropriate plot.

Thoughts? I need to cut off some branches so I can see the shape of the tree.

What about Greg and music lessons. Connie plays violin, maybe she tries learning Guitar. And Greg would have still known the Gems from his relationship with Rose. Maybe Greg even views Connie as the child he missed out on? Maybe he thinks things like "wow Rose sure would have loved to meet you."

Congrats on your new writing. I'm glad it's working out for you.

As for me, I'm trying to get through writing block right now. I know where I want to be. I mostly know where I'm going. I just have such a hard time sitting down and doing it.

I'm working on my plans for NaNo and having a lot of fun with the worldbuilding. I'm having fun thinking like the villain and figuring out how to do creative things within the rules of the magic system too.

I've also recently had a sudden desire to try making a comic so I've started working on character designs and stuff. I keep meaning to learn to draw better so now I'm just going to dive right in and get the practice I need while having fun with a story I like. And no one ever needs to see how crappy most of it will be. :D

If anyone has some good resources for anatomy and stuff, that would be helpful.

I'm working on planning for original things during November, but also probably writing a fic I'll just post on my DW. Low stakes and all.

Also after getting ideas at work I've been thinking about worldfusion crossovers. Sort of AU-y fics that combine aspects from both worlds and fuse them together. It's cool because it still includes some worldbuilding and room for inventing stuff but is also sorta fic.

Looking into fandoms like Pokemon and Sims lately where the kind of stuff I like writing is probably more accepted and common.

Also I need to get back to my MLP fics. I have no ideas for those.

Just a fanfiction. Crossover .... well, it's not a crossover because they're canonically in the same universe, at least regarding the toyline.

Yep! Honestly, I'm not fond of the fact that they're canonically connected outside of Cupid transferring - I really don't want to see some kind of crossover movie, because one way or another, someone is getting very oddly animated.

I'm confused. Wouldn't the production value of a movie go up? So the animation should be better?

If it's for an actual theater movie (like the MH one next year is live action), then yeah, if it's another direct to DVD hour long show, EAH gets better while MH sticks with the CGI and it all look really weird.

Ah snap. I'm sorry to hear that. At least though, I can wish you the best of luck on your fic.

Does my second law school memo count as writing? Because that's all that's getting done right now, tragically. (CONGRATS on sticking with a story idea! That's awesome.)

Arrow fic

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
There is hardly any Arrow genfic so I'm writing one...I've been looking for a detailed timeline of the events of the show but no luck so far. I just need to know what happens when on the island!

I'm currently writing three fics at once because ideas seem to come to me in droves. I was working on my first two-chapter porny fic for the last couple of days (the way the plotting is ending up needs to be split even though both chapters are short), but today I switched to working on an angsty, porny fic because I was in the mood for angst.

I'm writing an original story that I really want to finish before November because I've got a different story I want to do for NaNoWriMo. I'm also sporadically working on a fanfic. I haven't written fanfic in years though, so I keep asking myself, "Would she really do this? Would he really say this?" Sometimes I miss my junior high days when I just wrote fic without bothering to think of the canon.

I actually wrote a couple hundred words yesterday. I know that is next to nothing, but it was the first time I got anything out at all in months, so it felt good.

Re: Writing Thread

I'm writing a Star Wars fic, and had a long and involved conversation today about technology in the universe that unstuck a few things in my head and made it easier to figure out how certain plot points that I want to have happen are going to happen. Which is good, because I went from writing a few hundred words a day (or more) to writing a few sentences a week when I got this job, so un-sticking is necessary.

(We ended up deciding that most of the tech in Star Wars is explainable as embedded systems - with the exception of droids, to have a truly smart computer, you need it to be big. Ships and speeders and other things that don't have room for what amounts to a server room are only as smart as they need to be to operate, and no smarter. Data storage isn't a problem, but computational power is; the Falcon probably has multiple encyclopedias worth of data about various planets and whatnot, but the navicomputer is the smartest thing about it, and anything that can be is run mechanically with switches and dials and buttons. Droids are a truly weird exception, because astromechs like R2 can perform navigational calculations in addition to learning, analyzing situations, and interacting with other systems, all in a compact little body - but after a certain point even I throw up my hands and say "okay, that's just how it is.")
