I actually think rich assholes in media are, at least in part, an attempt to keep average people from wanting to be "too" successful. The feeling I internalized from growing up with no view of rich people except what TV and movies showed me was, "I hope I never make too much money, because then I'll either become an asshole or everyone will think I'm one like all these rich people on TV."
