People should just do commissions. Draw/Write stuff and share it for the love of the show/book/movie/game...

If someone likes your stuff enough to want you to do something specific for them, then charge them.

That's what's happening with most people who have a fic Patreon - either they're doing straight up comission work, or they're offering to write for pay something they have an enthusiastic audience for, but might not be particularly enthused about anymore themselves. (Sequels for fic, fic of some piece of meta that's got dozens of 'write this fic please' responses, expansion on AU drabbles, etc.)

I'm sure there are a couple people out there who are writing their own vanity projects and asking to be paid for it, but it isn't really the norm.
