Stupid guilt

(Anonymous) 2015-10-21 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm currently on vacation in Vancouver, and today I was trying to figure out public transit and fares and not get lost and when I was waiting for the bus and wondering if it was the right bus and if I was going to end up going the wrong way and cursing my stupid locked phone which meant no google maps or local transit website, someone asked me for money, like people do. The whole "do you have any spare change for food" thing. Normally I'll just pull out some change, or if I have the time I try and buy food instead because I have relatives who're (or were, a lot of them are dead) addicts and alcoholics. But I couldn't, and I said so. And this guy kept asking. He wasn't threatening or anything, just pushy, and he could see I had money.
Except what I had was bus fare and a couple of extra dollar coins in case I'd miscalculated. I wasn't trying to be a miser. And now I feel guilty, and annoyed with myself for feeling guilty. I should've just offloaded my American change on him.

There is no need at all for you to feel guilty about that. You can't help everybody.

But talking about stupid guilt, I feel guilty that I'm going on vacation to a place an online friend has been saving up to go for ages. From my sister brought up the idea of travelling there to actually booking plane tickets took less than a week. I feel absurdly guilty about being able to just do that, though I know that there is really no reason for me to be.

Don't feel bad, anon. Chances are he didn't need it for food (but you probably know this already) and while it's okay to ask once, you told him no. That's his cue to stop asking and move the fuck on. He kept asking you because he was gambling on making you feel guilty or uncomfortable enough to pay him to go away.
