This episode was so sad to me, but I get why it wasn't as much for you. Sadness is so subjective. It is less sad after you've watched later things in the series, but it still hits me in the gut every time. Also that episode with Fry's brother and nephew the astronaut. That one gets to me too.

I'm actually currently rewatching this series, and I know Jurassic Bark is going to make me cry.

That's the one. I'm not good with episode names. I watched that one on Monday and I definitely got a bit teary.

Futurama is one of my comfort shows that I'll just have on in the background when I need something comforting. I've gotten to know more about it than anyone needs to.

Oh god, the first I watched the nephew astronaut episode, I felt like I got punched in the gut.

I know. I think all those past episodes really get to me. Like, the show is all funny and Fry is really happy in the future. But then we're reminded of all the things and people he's missing and who are missing him and it hurts.

I'm one of the anons downthread that lists "Luck of the Fryrish" as their personal saddest episode, but for some reason, reading your comment reminded me of "Game of Tones" and even just sitting here thinking about it, I teared up.

The episodes that remind you that the Fry family spent the rest of their lives missing Philip, never knowing what happened to him and how that shaped the rest of their lives gut me.

Of this show, or any show? Either way you are probably right. (Though I wouldn't know since I didn't watch Futurama.)

I did see this episode though, and it got to me. Dogs, man. A lot of people just freak out over anything dogs. (Or animals in general, which I can't blame them for; I'm the same.)

Yeah, that episode wasn't super sad for me. It might because I've never had a pet or dog? Idk

Parasites Lost, the Flowers for Algernon-like episode where Fry becomes super smart and Leela falls for him so he decides to go back to his old self to see if she really love him, made me cry, lol. Probably because I was a big Fry/Leela shipper back in the day.

That one was really sad too. And I was a pretty big Fry/Leela shipper too. I'm rewatching and it is bringing back all my Fry/Leela feelings.

It was a sad episode, but I agree with you on that.

It's almost as if different people react differently to emotional situations!

I think it's sad for a lot of us because we owned pets, and the idea of them dying some day before us hurts. Also the fact that Seymour died alone and waiting for Fry just really hits a nerve.

Of course, I'm not talking for everyone and I do agree there are more sad episodes. This one just hurts!

Oh man. Their sad episodes destroyyyyyyy me (but yeah, they have several)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-22 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I have dogs. I love dogs. Just a couple weeks ago I got choked up thinking about one of my dogs who passed away last year. I still don't find this episode sad because it's so shoehorned. "Hey, you know all the stuff we've carefully constructed about Fry's past? Also there was a dog that died. Be sad about that!"

This one probably still wins out as the saddest episode for me(putting animals in sad situations is a guarantee I will bawl my eyes out), but a lot of the sad episodes in Futurama were very effective at evoking my feelings even if I didn't find them as upsetting as this one.

So you're not wrong, it's just a subjective thing is all.

That episode is only a big deal because dog people are obsessed with anything that involves dogs and like to make a huge screaming thing out of it if the things are sad. Sure, it's a bit sad, but as a non-dog person, it irritates the crap out of me when people rant and scream about HOW SADDDDD IT ALL IS ISN'T IT THE SADDEST THING LITERALLY EVER OMG DOGS DOGS DOGS IF YOU DON'T LOVE DOGS MORE THAN LIFE YOU ARE MENTALLY DISTURBED AND SHOULD GET THERAPY DOGS DOGS.

That sounds a little bitter and crazy, sorry. I'm just very tired of dog people trying to force me to worship dogs. I just don't like 'em most of the time, k? Imo the most emotional episode was "Luck of the Fryrish" where Fry spends most of the ep thinking his brother looked down on him but found out in the end that his bro really loved him and named his kid after him.

I love dogs and my own dog's sitting beside me on the couch right now, but that episode never made me tear up. Not even a little bit. It made me feel a little sad, but Luck of the Fryrish and Game of Tones made me bawl. Especially Game of Tones when Fry's mom said she's dreamt about him every day and they hug.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-22 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, OP.

I personally find "The Luck of the Fryrish" sadder, but that's just my opinion.

Luck of the Fryish for me anon, damn that episode.

The one with his brother is sadder for me but I still sometimes tear up at this episode. However that stupid retcon in one of the films ruined it for me. It's so lazy, like they said "this upset people so let's make it better!" and it did the exact opposite. Silly writers.
