I tell myself that I'm going to sit down and work for 10 minutes and that's it. Most of the time I end up getting into it and going past that but I don't force myself if I'm really struggling and want to stop. If that happens, I give myself another 10 minutes to do something fun and then try for another 10 minutes of work.

Similarly, I break things down into ridiculously tiny pieces. E.g. "1. Get out problem set. 2. Write name. 3. Read 1st problem. 4. If the necessary strategy isn't obvious, open text book to relevant section. 5. Review how this type of problem is done..." I build momentum as I cross things off and it keeps my motivation up.
