Oh, thank God. I need to talk about one of my professors who is driving me absolutely up the goddamn wall.

I'm in law school. I won't specify the class, but it is extremely important to my upcoming career. I am not allowed to drop this class at all. It's not an option. They have assigned us the most bonkers, out-of-his-mind professor they could find. Here's a list of the stupid shit that he's done thus far.

-We don't have a syllabus or set lesson plan.
-He'll assign us cases to read and then we'll never cover them literally ever.
-He doesn't know any of our names and only calls on the 3 people whose names he knows.
-He will say confusing stuff and then say "Good, you're confused! Let's move on."
-He says our final exam "doesn't matter".
-I haven't learned anything. Literally nothing. I'm not even kidding. I got the E&E, which is a supplementary material and is basically an outline of the class I'm learning. We've covered 2 paragraphs of the E&E in 5 weeks.
-He tried to teach us a concept and says that it's like "chicken sexing" and spent 30 minutes discussing how to sex a chicken.
-He will not answer your question if you ask him one. He will just answer the question he wanted you to ask.
-He assigned us a paper and then just wrote on mine "Bland. How does this show me who you are?"

I'm angry, the point is.

That sounds really shit. Can you complain to the dean? Can you get a group of your classmates together to complain?

I second this anon. What you describe is not okay.

A group of my classmates are planning on it, but I'm sure that it won't amount to anything.

I had a crazy guy like this in my paralegal program, too. (Although, to be fair, your guy sounds waaaaaay crazier.) I wrote what I thought was a thoughtful, honest teaching critique of his style (like I did for every teacher I had, the administration collected them) and turned it in. My friend, who had he thrown a whiteboard marker at in class (seriously) complained to the head of the program and was told, basically, yes, he's super eccentric, but he's also a famous trial lawyer, you should be proud to spend time with him in any capacity. I'm not sure what it is with law school attracting the crazies, but you are certainly not alone, OP, and I hope you can get through this bizarre "class."

That's the worst. I'm sorry. I had a couple really bad law school professors too (one was my civ pro professor, I learned Civ Pro through Barbri 1L lectures, the textbook she chose wasn't even any good).

I wouldn't say you've learned nothing if you learned how to sex a chicken.

DA

Not to diminish your very real problems, Original Anon, but I read this and busted out laughing about the thought that if this was a movie, that knowledge would indeed someday be deeply important and cause you to win the case that would make your career.

I'm original anon.

I imagine opposing counsel would pull out a chicken as Exhibit 1. (I've not been in law school very long.) "This chicken, Exhibit 1, is clearly male. Therefore, it could not have laid the aforementioned egg.

I stand up triumphantly. "Oh no, your Honor!" I yell. "May I approach the bench?" Judge nods. They're wearing that hair thingy. I grab the chicken and point at it. "Look. This chicken has boobies. This is clearly a FEMALE chicken. Case dismissed!" Then there's a big party because everyone wanted me to win.

No, we didn't learn how to sex chickens. He said we just have to "know it when we see it".

ughhhhh that sounds like such shit. I commiserate, anon. :(

I hope you can really get through it! I also second/third/whatever the notion of going to the dean. It may help, and even if it doesn't, what have you got to lose? Document everything you can and go with classmates, or have several of you go separately. Also hopefully you will have a class eval at the end of the course (do they do that in grad school?).

*Blinks*

Oooooooookay...

Seriously, though, ugh, that guy sounds...infuriating, to say the least. I'm sorry you have to deal with him-and it sucks that you can't drop out.
