Alien/Alien Director's Cut spoiler here

There's a scene in the Director's Cut of Alien that I can't stand. It's the bit where Ripley, towards the end of the film, happens upon what appears to be a nest of some sort, with Brett and Dallas in the process of being turned into eggs.

It drives me crazy because it makes no sense, even if you ignore the expansion of the xenomorph lifecycle in Aliens. The film worked just fine with the eggs (and the Derelict) being a mystery.

As someone who is not super informed about Aliens, why does it not make sense? Because they lay eggs in people?

The life cycle as described by Aliens is basically:

Queen lays eggs --> eggs hatch facehuggers --> facehuggers impregnate prey --> chestburster pops from prey after short period of time (few hours to a day or so) --> chestburster eventually molts into adult xenomorph.

None of this egg-morphing shit.

I think they were going for something similar as to what would be used in Jurassic Park later, where a species in extinction risk could shift gender to ensure survival. It's not the greatest added scene, though, and isn't necessary to the overall film. It gives too much closure to Ripley regarding Dallas, really.

James Cameron's explanation is much better.
