Honestly, if what you said right there doesn't convince him, nothing will. It's not a matter of not explaining it clearly, it's that this guy is bad at managing money and the rush he gets from scoring a "bargain" is more important than being thrifty. I hope you're not in a relationship with him, and if you are, make sure you keep your finances separate and don't ever let him have access to your money, credit cards, etc.
