This is how I read it too. Like, if the author OP was talking about was E.L. James, I could understand, because it's honestly not egotistical at all to say you'd lower yourself to write like James if it meant getting James' perks. But John Green? He may not be Steinbeck or Margaret Atwood or whoever, but I'd say he can be pretty darn proud of his books.
