Horror Movies!

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-10-23 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
My sister and I are going to watch some scary movies for Halloween. We have seen most of the ones on Netflix but can anyone rec their favorite horror movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime?

I think one of our movies will be The Thing.

The Thing is pretty great but the remake left a lot to be desired.

Yeah it did. :(

Wait, let me mini-rant. IT MADE ME SO MAD THAT THEY FUCKED EVERYTHING UP! But, what annoyed me the most was that they could not find a dog that looked like the one at the beginning of the first one. YOU COULD NOT HAVE VAGUELY PAINTED THAT DOG???

I like the first Saw movie a lot. Silence of the Lamb and Red Dragon are always favorites. Psycho and Carrie for classics. And Cabin in the Woods for something much more recent.

Thanks! I don't think any of us have seen Psycho because we are terrible people.

I actually only saw it recently. I was not allowed to watch horror movies as a kid (though I read all the scary books), but I've been really getting into classic horror recently.

I don't know how you feel about old movies but I like The Omen. And I was happy to see that Amazon Prime has An American Werewolf in London.

Amazon also reminded me that I need to watch some Vincent Price this month, but they don't have some of his best.

I love The Omen! I'll need to see if my siblings have seen it.

The Prophecy (1995)has Christopher Walken as an evil, intensely creepy Gabriel.
Summary: Angels come to Earth to find a human soul that can end the war in heaven. Humans are caught up in this battle and must find a way to stop the angel Gabriel before he takes the soul back from where the angel Simon has hidden it.

I saw that when I was looking through Amazon's movies and was intrigued.

I doubt it's on Netflix or AP, but if you can get Ju-On, I've not seen scarier. (NOT The Grudge. Lousy white remake.)

I love that movie. But I am not sure if we will be sober enough to read subtitles. :|

I saw The Grudge and thought it was super creepy. Watched Ju-On after, and it just didn't do it for me.

If you're American, your netflix has a movie called Housebound that I thought was clever as fuck. A 20sish girl gets caught breaking into an ATM and put under house arrest in her mom's place...and then becomes convinced it's haunted.

Already watched it but it is a fantastic movie!

Two Sisters is a classic Korean horror film...not really TERRIFYING, per se, but I found it really eerie and creepy.

I will always rec Thankskilling because it's as good as it seems.

Also the scene with the sheriff to give you an idea on how ridiculous it is.

Scream 1, 2 and 3 (4th one was terrible), Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday 13th, Urban Legend, Texas Chainsaw Massacre... I can't remember many right now, but those pretty standard for Halloween!

In terms of sheer horror, The Descent is my fave. A group of several (five?) female friends go spelunking for the weekend, get trapped, and start getting picked off by scary critters. It scared the shit out of me (it also terrified my father, for the record). I also love it because it's absolutely, 100% a horror movie, but at the same time it's really different from most horror movies, because the writer deliberately chose to make all the characters women in order to explore how a horror movie would be different if some of the most basic (and cliched) horror movie dynamics and tropes were subverted.

I love 28 Days Later, though I'm not sure it completely counts as a horror movie.

Let the Right One In is also really good, but also only with only one foot in the horror genre. Plus, way too thinky and quiet (and subtitled) for if you're going to be drinking.
