The MCU

and I truly don't mean it as a DC is better thing...I just don't really see the appeal beyond "my favorite characters are on a big screen, no matter what else is happening."

That's pretty much it. Marvel has hit upon a winning formula where they make dumb fun comic book movies that carefully avoid getting too bogged down in historical details from the comics while building a continuity all their own. They're not brilliant movies (though Captain America 1 comes close) but they've made superheroes fun again.

I agree with this, except I'd say that Cap 2 and Guardians are the only two brilliant movies while the rest are just really enjoyable.

It's the characters. The plots are pretty paint by numbers (with generic stories and forgettable villains) but it's the characters I really care about. They all have defined personalities and seeing them put in difficult situations is really fun for a lot of fans. It's also probably why there's so much fic.

Comparatively, I find DC films have more intricate plots but really dull, forgettable characters that I don't care about. Characters seem to represent ideas more than be actual people.

See Nolan's Batman films: Alfred, Harvey, Rachel, the Joker. They're not people; they each just represent an ideology. It's boring to me.
