From what I can see, it's like T*pperware parties (which I've been to, and rolled my eyes through the whole thing). Just had a look at the website and everything looks super-bland. Because the host is usually someone you know, you feel guilted that you should buy something since you know them, you're in their house, they're feeding you, and they went to all that effort. Add alcohol and no one's in a good position to make good financial decisions at all.

(This sort of peer-to-peer marketing is effective. A housemate of mine used our loungeroom to host her fucking Scientology-offshoot parties, I kept having to rescue my sucker housemates from her inspirational cash-grabbing grasp, eventually I put my foot down and told her to take them elsewhere.)
