There's also an artistic/academic argument to be made with some works

I haven't watched much horror, but I think about this sometimes. I think that really good horror (i.e. horror that is complex, smart, and horrifying) is incredibly difficult to create, and I'm always extremely impressed when someone manages to do it. In fact, it's almost like there's a magic too it, since horrifying (or deeply disturbing) someone is a very strong and also difficult effect to evoke in most people.
