Social issues you wish you didn't know about.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-24 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some things you know you have to be socially aware of that have ruined things for you?

Relevant to me because I watched Pan today. I spent my time wanting to vomit at the love story the shoe-horned in, feeling like I had to do significant violence to someone because of the racism they loaded it up with, and kinda squeeing about how bad-ass Tiger-Lilly was. In the end I couldn't enjoy the good bits because I know that the bad bits are too bad and have to over rule that.

So after getting over my misgivings about 90% of the other casting, I sat and watched the Hunger Games movies. They're okay, I like Catching Fire the best. I liked Johanna and wanted to see more of her, but apparently the casting call was for Latin@ women and Jena Malone went in there and auditioned anyway :/

Any legal way I was going to watch part 2 now has gone kaput unless I tag along with someone and sneak in.

Either that's made up (receipts?) or Jena Malone actually is part Latina.

Or option 3: Jena Malone is scum

lol grow up.

The latter isn't outside the realm of possibility. I mean I've seen a variety of latinas who could (and do) get mistaken for being white.

tbh lots of Latinas ARE white. Latino is a really hard "race" to define, because kids even within the same families can be drastically different shades and hair color. Lots of Latino people therefore will identify as Latino and white. It's why on the US Census and other documents where you have to list your race, Hispanic/Latino always has a description or option to select "white" as well.

For example, there's the guy born as Martin Estevez, today best-known for playing a guy named Bartlet from New Hampshire.

And the son who kept the Estevez name in public is blond.

Yeah, he's part-Irish, part-Spaniard.

AYRT

I do certainly hope there's an explanation like that, but the previous casting of this franchise has me less than hopeful.

Links? The only thing I found about the casting call was this and they did not specify looks or race for Johanna at all:

The Wayback Machine archived the original page from the audition site:

it sounds to me like you don't really care about oppressed minorities, and are just fussing because you know you should.

I'm kinda side-eyeing you.

Nobody wants to deal with SJ BS while trying to enjoy mindless entertainment. That's the whole point.

I normally try to stay far away from these threads, but it's completely possible to enjoy something while being aware of its shortcomings in regards to portrayals of marginalized communities. Just because you found XYZ problematic, doesn't mean you have to go somewhere on the internet and write a five-paragraph analysis on said element.

And honestly, as someone who's Indigenous, it does sting to hear OP say knowledge that about issues we face diminished their enjoyment of a movie (at least that's the impression I got). To be honest, it's hard not to get mad, considering how a Cherokee friend of mine knew three girls from her nation who tried out for the Tiger Lily part, but were rejected.

Sounds like maybe 90-95% of so-called "social justice" "activists" on the internet who care less about the actual issue than they do about sticking it to the Evil White Cishet Male because it's the cool and edgy thing to do. So what's new?

rat queens

I wish I didn't know about the rat queens creator being a woman and child abuser. I loved that book, and now I have to stop reading it.

That makes zero sense. Having just looked this up... it was the illustrator, but not the writer; the illustrator now has nothing to do with the project; the writer knew nothing about it until the arrest. I really don't understand this mentality of "Oh, I have to stop reading a work of fiction because someone who worked on it did something bad".
