Speaking of spicy foods...

I've been wanting to try sriracha, but I don't want to buy some and hate it. So... What does it taste like, really?

Order from your local Chinese place. Ask for some sriracha on the side. Most Chinese places have it available.

I think it's kind of salty and just kind of has a heat to it, but not much of a flavor. Reminds me of Tabasco.

It's a thicker, fuller, less vinegar-y Tabasco.

TBH, nothing special. It's hot and slightly vinegary. I have no idea why it's become some a hot culinary trend lately and I'm alternately amused and annoyed by the fact that it's popular now because white people discovered an Asian hot sauce for the first time. If you hit up an Asian grocery, you can buy an enormous bottle of it for a few dollars so even if you don't like it, you're not out a whole lot of cash.

Isn't it basically 95% because The Oatmeal liked it and The Oatmeal's internet personality involves being a hyperbolic fountain of memes (not that I'm complaining, I honestly find it entertaining)?

I mean, I'm reasonably sure Americans have at least known about chili oil since way before the whole Sriracha thing. Then again, secondhand information, I've never been there.

Slightly vinegary, quite garlicky, medium to hot spice factor.

It's quite good as a condiment to add to other sauces (e.g. peanut sauce), but I'm not really that fond of it on its own. It's not really the best tasting hot sauce out there.

Spicy, umami, some garlic and a bit of fruity sweetness

I only put it in pho and it tastes awesome that way, so you feeling up for some Vietnamese?

Weirdly sriracha can't be found in Vietnam and no one uses it with pho there.
